The Problem of Mara Venn

The first human I was assigned to study was assaulting a valve.

She had braced one boot against an atmospheric processor and was striking its coolant housing with a steel wrench. Each impact rang through the engineering bay, a hard metallic note followed by the softer complaint of loose panels. The processor was active. Blue status lamps trembled with every blow.

I stopped at the yellow boundary line painted across the deck.

“Human Mara,” I said, “the manufacturer's instructions prohibit percussive maintenance.”

She looked over one shoulder. She was smaller than the humans featured in Concord orientation materials and wore her black hair tied with a strip of electrical insulation. A faded patch on her coveralls read VENN, though the second N had been partially burned away.

“So does my supervisor,” she said.

She hit the valve again.

The processor gave a convulsive shudder. A column of warning lights turned green, and the flow indicator climbed from twelve percent to sixty-three.

Mara lowered the wrench. “See? It just needed to understand the situation.”

Pelagos translated the gesture as maintenance. This was generous. The station had outlived five engineering standards, three hull registries and the government that issued its original tool lockers. Anything done to it could be called maintenance if the person doing it survived long enough to complete the paperwork.

The processor occupied the human habitat, but it served six atmospheres. Warm oxygen crossed its upper exchanger. Methane coolant passed beneath that in pipes marked with Uru scent glyphs. An Orresh water loop folded between them, insulated by ceramic plates manufactured on a Saph moon. No species had designed the whole machine. The Concord considered that proof of cooperation. Mara considered it the reason no replacement part fit.

My orientation record called Pelagos a minor orbital settlement at the edge of the Nacre systems. Its residents called it the ship, the ring, the old mistake and—in contracts requiring an address—Pelagos Provisional Infrastructure. The dark planet below had eleven names. None meant home.

I crossed the boundary line because the immediate danger appeared to have passed. This was my first error aboard Pelagos Station.

“Machines do not understand threats,” I told her.

“This one did.”

“You are anthropomorphizing a pressure regulator.”

“And you're standing too close to a coolant seam.”

I moved.

A white jet burst from the processor where my torso had been. Frost spread across the deck. Mara stepped through the vapor, caught an overhead pipe with one hand and closed a secondary valve with the other. She did this without apparent urgency. Humans frequently mistake a practiced response for calm, both in themselves and in observers' reports.

When the vapor cleared, she was watching me with her lips pressed together.

“You can laugh,” I said. “The orientation files explained the expression.”

She did.

My name is Sey. In the language of my people, the sound indicates one who stands at a useful distance. I had spent seventy-one standard years observing humanity from useful distances: first through intercepted broadcasts, then through diplomatic archives, then in controlled interviews on worlds constructed to accommodate human requirements.

Pelagos was to be different. Pelagos was not controlled enough to conceal ordinary behavior. The station was old, understaffed and home to thirty-one species who had ceased trying to impress one another. Human Mara Venn had been selected not because she was a leader, athlete, soldier or celebrated thinker, but because she was statistically unexceptional.

Her personnel record listed atmospheric engineering certification, emergency medical qualification, seventeen reprimands, four commendations and one formal prohibition against storing agricultural organisms in crew ventilation.

The apparent contradiction had recommended her to me.

Mara crouched beside the processor and removed a warped access plate.

“You're the Vey who's here to figure us out,” she said.

“I have been assigned to identify humanity's governing instinct.”

“Right.” She reached into the live machine.

“That is unsafe.”

“Very.”

“The processor can be disconnected at the main junction.”

“Also true.”

“Then why have you not disconnected it?”

“Because this unit feeds Habitat Six.”

I knew the station diagram. Habitat Six housed Orresh families in nine thousand tonnes of temperature-controlled salt water. Their young breathed through external membranes for the first two years of life. Even a brief change in dissolved oxygen could scar those membranes permanently.

“There is a redundant processor,” I said.

“It's running at ninety-four percent.”

“The engineering limit is ninety-seven.”

Mara withdrew her hand and displayed a small piece of melted insulation. “The engineering limit was written when Pelagos still had an engineering budget.”

This statement carried no new technical information, yet it changed the meaning of the numbers. I disliked that. Numbers were not supposed to change when humans touched them.

“You are accepting personal danger to protect unrelated offspring,” I said.

“I'm fixing a valve.”

“The offspring are not genetically related to you.”

“I hope not. That would raise several questions about my twenties.”

I waited. Humans often concealed important statements behind humor, then pretended the listener had failed by taking them seriously.

The offspring were Uru, which made genetic relation especially unlikely. Their nursery occupied a warm chamber behind the processor wall, and the valve Mara was striking controlled the secondary coolant loop that kept industrial heat from bleeding through the insulation. Uru young did not breathe royal air until their second molt. Their first bodies were small, soft and chemically unfinished, each suspended in a woven cradle attended by workers who communicated through pressure and taste.

The nursery attendant waited beyond the safety stripe. Seven—as the translator rendered the worker's designation—had six limbs folded tightly beneath a maintenance apron and a tool bundle arranged on the floor. Seven knew more about the processor's temperature than either of us. Station regulations nevertheless prohibited an Uru nursery worker from opening a coolant housing without an engineering credential.

“You reported this failure four times,” I said.

Seven touched two fingertips to the deck. “Four reports were acknowledged.”

“Acknowledgment is not repair,” Mara said.

“Acknowledgment prevents a second report from being classified as new.”

The processor struck back when Mara's wrench slipped. Metal opened the skin across two knuckles. She placed the wound briefly in her mouth, examined the blood and resumed work.

I recorded pain response, persistence and poor contamination discipline.

Seven watched the blood with every scent fold closed. Uru workers did not possess the human habit of pretending injury had failed to occur. “The nursery can be moved,” Seven offered.

“Where?” Mara asked.

“The eastern ferment room.”

“Which shares air with the queen's passage and would dose the children six weeks early.”

Seven's forelimbs tightened. The station file called that response acquiescence. I had never before wondered what it cost.

Mara crouched and selected a narrow driver from Seven's tools. She did not ask permission. Then, after fitting it against the warped fastener, she looked up and held it out.

“Your housing,” she said. “You turn it.”

Seven remained still.

“Regulation—” I began.

“Says Seven can't open it,” Mara said. “It doesn't say the licensed engineer can't put the tool in the correct place and supervise.”

“That interpretation violates the purpose of the restriction.”

“The purpose of the restriction is to keep untrained people from puncturing a coolant line. Seven knows the line better than the person who wrote the rule.”

The worker accepted the driver. The first turn required enough force to lift half Seven's body from the deck. Mara steadied the tool without taking it back. When the fastener broke free, warm air moved through the processor and the nursery wall stopped trembling.

From behind it came a series of faint knocks. The offspring were responding to the pressure change.

Seven placed a palm against the panel. The gesture was not maintenance.

“You could have completed that action more quickly,” I told Mara afterward.

“Probably.”

“Why involve Seven?”

She wrapped her knuckles with a strip torn from an obsolete warning label. “Because next time I might not be here.”

At the time I classified this as ordinary human anticipation of death. It took me much longer to understand that Mara had been planning for the survival of other people's competence.

Mara sighed and sat on the deck. “Somebody has to fix it. I'm here. That's the whole philosophy.”

I recorded the sentence.

POSSIBLE GOVERNING INSTINCT: indiscriminate herd preservation.

Mara leaned sideways to look at my screen. “You're going to solve humanity before lunch?”

“It is unlikely.”

“Good. I have money riding on Thursday.”

“You wagered on the duration of my research?”

“Station pool. Ren has you down for nine days before you request reassignment.”

“And you?”

“I said you'd last a month.”

“That appears complimentary.”

“Don't be flattered. I picked the empty square.”

She returned to the processor. I remained because an observer who retreats from ridicule soon observes only polite subjects.

By midday, Mara had replaced the insulation, recalibrated the flow sensor and used the wrench only twice more. Habitat Six reported stable oxygen. Three Orresh juveniles pressed their faces to the transparent service partition and opened their feeding fans at her, which my translator described as an expression of profound familial trust.

Mara pretended not to see them.

Afterward, she submitted six hours of labor as four.

“Why did you falsify the record?” I asked.

“Because if the repair takes longer than four, the system opens a procurement investigation.”

“A procurement investigation might reveal the need for replacement equipment.”

“A procurement investigation would shut down the processor as noncompliant.”

“Then the correct report produces the incorrect outcome.”

“You're learning.”

I added a note beneath the provisional classification.

OBSERVATION: subject distinguishes moral correctness from procedural correctness. This distinction may be situational, self-serving or both.

Mara approved of that sentence.

I did not see her again until the evening meal, when I found her cheating three merchants at cards.

The game occupied a corner of Pelagos's central exchange beneath a lighting panel that brightened and dimmed according to no schedule. The merchants were Talren dock contractors: broad, plated beings whose obedience to legitimate hierarchy made commercial negotiation unusually efficient. They followed rules even when the rules impoverished them.

Mara had dealt herself five cards. My translation lens identified the game as sink, a human wagering exercise whose official rules allowed four.

No one else appeared to have noticed.

“Your herd-preservation theory lasted six hours,” she said as I approached.

“You are stealing from members of your social community.”

The nearest contractor looked at his cards. “Engineer Venn, are you stealing from us?”

Cards were not among the approved methods for studying humanity. The Vey Institute preferred controlled interviews conducted after a shared meal, because hunger, courtesy and novelty could then be removed from the model. Pelagos supplied none of those conditions. Its day was divided into twenty station hours inherited from the colony vessel, while most residents ate according to biological cycles that ignored them. A market bell rang at local noon. Uru slept through it, Saph hid from it and humans used it to decide whether a drink counted as breakfast.

The game itself had crossed species lines badly. Talren treated a declared wager as a temporary command structure. Orresh players remembered the moisture left by every hand on every card. Humans changed the rules whenever everyone became competent. I had recorded this last practice as possible hostility. Mara called it keeping the evening alive.

“Sey is conducting cultural research.”

“That was not an answer.”

“Then you are beginning to understand cultural research.”

She placed three cards face down and pushed forty station credits into the center.

The contractors consulted one another. Talren decision rituals are formal and visible. Each participant states a preferred outcome, the ranking individual selects one, and the others experience genuine neurological relief when responsibility transfers upward.

Mara watched the ritual. Then she scratched the left side of her nose.

All three contractors surrendered their cards.

She collected the credits.

“That gesture was a signal,” I said.

“What gesture?”

“You trained them to associate touching your face with a strong hand.”

“Did I?”

“You touched the opposite side during the previous round.”

Mara's expression changed by less than a millimeter. That was sufficient confirmation.

I addressed the contractors. “She possessed an illegal fifth card and manipulated your learned response.”

The three Talren stared at Mara.

Mara stared at me.

I experienced the quiet satisfaction of an accurate intervention.

Then the ranking contractor made the Talren sound of delighted revelation.

“We were deceived outside the rules,” he said. “There was no valid authority requiring our surrender.”

The others struck the table in approval.

Mara returned their credits, kept twenty for what she called tuition and bought me a drink whose label warned that Vey digestive enzymes might interpret it as industrial solvent.

“You knew they would enjoy being cheated,” I said.

“I suspected.”

“And if they had not?”

“I'd have run.”

“Is that your governing instinct?”

“Running?”

“Acting without certainty.”

She considered the question more seriously than I expected.

“No,” she said. “That's just what you call living when nobody gives you the script.”

I deleted the herd-preservation hypothesis.

The game ended when the market lights shifted to the station's approximation of evening. The contractors departed with lighter accounts and the solemn conviction that Mara had committed a kind of social fraud. One promised never to play against a human again. He had made the same promise the previous week.

Mara divided her winnings into four uneven stacks.

“Those are not your creditors,” I said as she labeled the transfers.

“Not yet.”

One payment went to the Saph market association for a roll of reflective membrane. Another went to an Orresh reservoir cooperative for two hours of high-pressure access. The third purchased a crate of fasteners manufactured before the current thread standard. The final stack remained in physical credits.

“You obtained all of those supplies through procurement yesterday.”

“Procurement obtained approvals. Approval is a ceremonial stage between need and disappointment.”

She carried the credits down three decks to a laundry operated by an elderly human named Tomas. The laundry accepted every species whose garments could survive water, solvent, vacuum or some negotiated combination. It also contained Pelagos's least official repair counter. Behind the dryers stood shelves of components whose documented owners had ceased to exist, forgotten them or become governments unwilling to admit they needed them.

Tomas examined Mara's credits. “You cheated Talren contractors again.”

“They misunderstood me honestly.”

“That's what cheating is when you put on clean clothes.”

He gave her a ceramic control collar and a sealed packet of fungal sealant. Neither appeared in the station inventory.

I asked where they came from.

“History,” Tomas said.

The collar had belonged to a water pump in Habitat Two, then an illegal brewery, then a temporary Saph cooling system during the Bright Fever. Each owner had altered it. Human machining marks crossed Orresh pressure grooves. Uru resin filled a fracture. A Vey evidence tag still declared the object unsafe for operational use.

“Pelagos survives on condemned parts,” Mara said.

“Pelagos survives on parts that have been condemned accurately,” Tomas corrected. “The accuracy is how we know what not to ask them to do.”

He placed the collar in Mara's hand and closed her fingers around it. Their species often used touch to transfer emphasis when language was sufficient. I had classified the redundancy as an attachment display.

“You heard the traffic?” he asked.

“Unregistered mass outside the moon,” Mara said.

“Could be surveyors.”

“Surveyors announce themselves so everyone has time to hide evidence.”

“Could be nothing.”

“Nothing doesn't alter the station's long-range clock.”

Tomas looked toward me. “And what does the observer say?”

“The object remains unidentified.”

“Useful profession.”

Mara smiled, but only with one side of her mouth. I had begun cataloging the differences. Both sides meant amusement. One side usually meant the body had selected amusement as a shield.

On our return to engineering, she installed the collar in Processor Four. It fit because six previous owners had filed away every feature meant to make it fit only one machine.

“You maintain an undocumented supply chain,” I said.

“I maintain documented friendships.”

“Tomas did not record the exchange.”

“He remembers it.”

“Memory is not a document.”

“No. Documents don't bring soup when you're sick.”

She tested the valve. The temperature settled two degrees below its former limit. Behind the wall, the nursery remained warm and the coolant line remained intact.

The station archive recorded a successful repair performed with an approved substitute component. It did not record Seven's hand on the tool, Tomas's shelves or the card players who had unknowingly financed the sealant. The official fact was correct.

It was also too small to explain why Pelagos continued to breathe.

At 23:17 station time, Pelagos's external sensors lost one star.

The failure lasted less than half a second. A dark spot moved across the outer array, occluding a point of light, and disappeared before the system could classify it. The station computer marked the incident as sensor decay. Pelagos had accumulated so many small failures that its diagnostic system no longer distinguished malfunction from personality.

Mara noticed because she was using an exterior camera to check whether her prohibited herbs received reflected light from the planet.

I noticed because I was still observing Mara.

“Debris?” I asked.

She replayed the missing star.

“Debris tumbles.”

“A maintenance drone?”

“Broadcasts an identifier.”

“Then what was it?”

Mara watched the darkness move again.

“Something that doesn't want the station asking questions.”

She sent the recording to Security Commander Tal Vorr. His office returned an automated receipt and no response.

Mara looked at the wrench hanging from her belt.

“That tool will not be useful against an unidentified object outside the station,” I said.

“You'd be surprised.”

I believed this was another human joke.

This was my second error aboard Pelagos Station.
